Q) What is an honor society?
A) Honor societies are a long-standing part of higher education tradition. They were originally established to encourage students to maintain strong academic standards. Being part of an honor society indicates that you are part of the tradition of academic excellence. Despite their names, they are not the same as a fraternity or sorority. This website has more info about honor societies, in general.

Q)How did I qualify?
A) In order to qualify to join Phi Theta Kappa at ARCC (Cambridge campus), students must have earned at least 12 college credits at a two-year college and have a grade point average of at least 3.25.
Q)Why should I join?
A) Once you join, you will become an official member of Phi Theta Kappa and receive the Golden Key pin and certificate and your membership can be announced in an official press release. Your status as an honor student will be marked on your official college transcript and diploma. Your membership also qualifies you for special scholarships, the ability to wear honor student regalia at graduation, and Phi Theta Kappa will provide letters of recommendation to scholarship officials and prospective employers upon request.
Q)How will a membership benefit me?
A) It depends on your plans. Transferring to a four-year school? Check CollegeFish.org to see what universities in your area offer transfer scholarships exclusively for PTK members. Earning a credential for work? Gain those important, but often unspoken, job skills like team-building and communication as you work with your chapter on projects. And everyone benefits from being surrounded by people who are eager to help you reach your educational goals.
Q) How much does it cost?
A) There is a one-time fee of $65, which is paid directly to the Phi Theta Kappa organization. This fee helps to keep the organization running so that it can continue to provide benefits to honors students, such as scholarships and leadership opportunities.
Q) What if I can’t afford the registration fee?
A) There is a scholarship available through the international Phi Theta Kappa organization that covers $60 of the registration fee. Contact the chapter advisor for more information about applying for that scholarship before the application deadline of March 9, 2018. The advisor will fill out the paperwork for you, but can only nominate three students (nominations are on a first-contact, first nomination basis).
Q) How involved do I have to be?
A) As an official member, you aren’t required to be involved or spend time participating in Phi Theta Kappa activities. If you choose to become an active member, you can choose your own level of involvement and decide which academic, fellowship, and service projects you want to complete.
Q) How do I get Phi Theta Kappa regalia for graduation?
A) You will order regalia on your own through the Phi Theta Kappa website, Ptk.org.
Q) Do I need to maintain my GPA to keep my Phi Theta Kappa membership?
A) Yes, in order to remain qualified to be a member of Phi Theta Kappa, your grade point average must stay at 3.0 or higher. If it drops below 3.0, you will have one semester to raise it above 2.99 or your Phi Theta Kappa membership will be cancelled. The $65 joining fee will not be refunded.
Q) Is Phi Theta Kappa related to Anoka-Ramsey Community College?
A) Yes! ARCC is proud to have two Phi Theta Kappa chapters that were established almost forty years ago. The ARCC website has more info about our two Phi Theta Kappa chapters.
Q)What happens if I transfer to a different college or university?
A) If transferring to a different two-year college, you will be able to transfer your membership. If transferring to a four-year college or university, you may be eligible for a special Phi Theta Kappa member scholarship. Visit collegefish.org for a list of participating colleges and universities.
Q) Are there any benefits for after I graduate?
A) After you graduate, you will become an alum of Phi Theta Kappa. At that point, your Phi Theta Kappa status allows you to participate in Phi Theta Kappa conferences as an alum, if you choose. You may also use your Phi Theta Kappa alum status as a networking/talking point when meeting others, which is especially helpful during interviews and job searches.
Q) Can I put my Phi Theta Kappa membership on my resume?
A) Of course! This is a great way to show that you are a serious student who is driven to be successful. It may also be a positive talking point if you happen to end up in a job interview with someone who is a Phi Theta Kappa alum.
